An Upside to Plastic Surgery Downtime, The Silver Lining Behind Your COVID Mask

An Upside to Plastic Surgery Downtime, The Silver Lining Behind Your COVID Mask

In the early stages of the COVID-19 pandemic, when there was an order for a complete lockdown expected and all elective procedures had to be postponed, Dr. Daniel Kuy wondered how the virus and subsequent shutdowns would affect his private practice, Kuy Plastic Surgery & Swiss Medi-Spa. He was very concerned whether he could retain all of his valuable staff members. “It has taken me several years to find the most wonderful, committed, skilled people who are working in surgery and assisting me with patient care. My office staff are exceptional!”

Nevertheless, he tried to see the silver lining to the ever-changing situation. This break would be a good opportunity to enhance the practice services, finish administrative projects, and enjoy extra rest to be energized for the reopening. Should the lockdown be extended, then Dr. Kuy would consider it a welcome “sabbatical”— a time to pursue other goals. That turned out not to be the case.

In fact, once businesses were allowed to reopen after six weeks, Kuy and his staff were busier than ever. This was due, in large part, to the fact that lifestyles had changed. No longer were people maintaining their hectic schedules. Plus, patients recognized that working from home provided an opportunity to make recovery a little easier from minor, or even major, procedures.

“Usually what holds people back from scheduling surgery is that they can’t seem to find the time to do it — between vacations, work commitments, and kids’ activities,” he explains. “Now, people call to make an appointment and even if I can’t work them in for a while, they say, ‘If I can’t do it this month, I’ll do it next month.’”

In addition, masks enable patients to hide treatments like injectables, Botox, fillers and facelift recovery swelling. “Patients don’t have to fear that the recovery period is going to interfere too much with their lifestyle,” Kuy notes. Social lives are on hold. People feel, ‘This is the perfect time for plastic surgery!’

Born and raised in Switzerland, Kuy has had training on both sides of the Atlantic, not just in medical school, but also aesthetic fellowship training. He completed his general surgery and plastic surgery residencies in Chicago where he also received excellent training in maxillofacial trauma and reconstruction, further developing his surgical skills. Board certified in both Switzerland and the U.S., Kuy opened a private practice in Zürich, before returning to Cincinnati 23 years ago. Throughout the years, he has maintained credentials and practices on both sides of the Atlantic.

In May 2015, Kuy opened Kuy Plastic Surgery & Swiss Medi-Spa in Hyde Park. He specializes in facial cosmetic surgery and body contouring, including breast augmentation, facelift, tummy tuck and eyelid surgery. Clients will experience a very private, clean, and beautiful environment, where they are greeted warmly and treated with careful consideration of their expected outcomes.

Kuy is thrilled to offer ‘Swiss precision’ procedures and luxury Medi-Spa services to his clients, such as skin rejuvenation to improve skin quality. These services utilize newest technologies and non-invasive techniques. He credits his experienced team for making it all possible. The practice most recently welcomed three aesthetic team members.

Advanced esthetician Kendra Coppage holds certifications in advanced aging and acne treatments, chemical peeling modalities, lymphatic draining and Dermaplane Pro, and specializes in treatment facials, chemical peels, dermaplaning, hydro jet peels, lash lifts, and brow shaping/waxing.

“She’s really passionate about what she does,” says Kuy. “She takes the time to make sure the patient is comfortable and leaves feeling confident and beautiful.”

Jessica King has over 10 years in the beauty business, starting with hair styling and makeup artistry, and now a true passion for skincare, utilizing the hydrafacial, dermaplaning, and chemical peels.

Ashleigh Biggs McGee, a board-certified Family Nurse Practitioner, practicing as a plastic surgery nurse provider and injector for the past 10 years, has been a welcome asset to Kuy’s practice. Ashleigh contributes her experience in post-operative care, laser therapy, as well as non-surgical body contouring, women’s wellness and aesthetic treatments.

Kuy espouses a unique perspective and personalized approach in how he cares for his patients and what he recommends to them.

“If I don’t think a procedure is beneficial to a client, I will tell them so,” Kuy says. “Through the years, I have developed loyal patients who appreciate my honesty.”
