For a Kenwood family, a ‘decent size’ kitchen with a small island and crowded footprint recently took on a whole new shape after being remodeled by Kinsella Kitchens and Baths.
“In the ‘before’ photo, you can see almost all the appliances lined up in a row, and very little working counter space near the sink,” says Designer Karen Kinsella. “The island was also smallish. The kitchen was further contained by a wall between it and the sitting and dining rooms. All these elements made the kitchen seem even smaller than it really was.
“The answer was to remove the wall, enlarge the small window in the corner over the sink, enlarge the breakfast area window and re-configure the pantry entrance and interior.”

The result is an open, sunny kitchen with great views of the treed backyard and lovely swimming pool. The cabinetry is a color called ‘Moonstone’ and the counters are Super White honed marble.
“The new plan creates a better work flow with much more usable counter space, and a great social element thanks to island seating and its openness to the living areas,” Karen says.
“Separating the appliances and opening up the corner at the refrigerator by setting the island on an angle allows for two people to be working together. The original pantry closet was accessed in the kitchen, and the ceiling angled down, following the stairs going to the second floor,” Karen continues.
“The client wanted a full-size oven and a steam/convection oven, so we rearranged the pantry closet. We used the existing opening to stack the steam oven and oven together, then moved the pantry opening around the corner and added a sliding door so it wouldn’t interfere with traffic flow when opened. There was enough room under the stairs for a six-foot ceiling height throughout the new walk-in pantry.”
