Intensive Programs in a Place of Beauty

Lindner Center of HOPE is not unlike the massive trees that line its driveway and paths — a mighty oak with mature branches that has grown into a haven offering the myriad of answers and assistance necessary to brave the various, challenging mental health storms that life may bring.

For 11 years, the Center has served the greater Cincinnati area, providing premier mental healthcare and addiction services. Located north of Cincinnati, in Mason, Lindner Center of HOPE appears lodge-like, sitting on 36 wooded acres, staffed with nationally recognized psychiatrists and doctoral-level clinicians.

Lindner Center of HOPE’s beautiful setting is simply the introduction to its various state-of-the-science offerings. Every program is built upon the solid foundation of successes and victories, supported by evidence-based research, assessment and treatment. Some general highlights include:

• Comprehensive diagnostic assessments and evaluations in comfortable, residential and intensive outpatient settings

• Safe and professionally staffed environments with 24-hour nursing included in residential programs

• Onsite full-time, expertly trained and credentialed high-level clinicians and dedicated treatment team with specialties in Mood Disorders, Addictive Disorders (including internet addiction), OCD/Anxiety, ADHD, Thought Disorders and Complex Co-morbidity

• Evidence-based individualized and group therapy sessions included in residential programs

• Thoughtful time-saving and cost-saving treatment planning with appropriate treatment recommendations in collaboration with referring professional

For adults, age 18 and older, The Williams House at Lindner Center of HOPE offers an intimate and stabilizing residential environment for those suffering with mental health, addiction or co-morbid issues. Psychiatric evaluation, cognitive work, medication adjustments/compliance, detox, observation and treatment initiation are all modalities which may be of benefit to these adults.

Highlights of the offerings at Williams House are:

• 10-day Stabilizing Evaluation

• 10-day Substance Use Disorder Detox and Evaluation

• Add-on Neuropsychological Testing and/or Treatment Initiation

• Continuing Treatment

• 28-day Extension Program

The Child/Adolescent Assessment at Lindner Center of HOPE is affordable and accessible in an intensive outpatient program for young people ages 6 to 17 (18 if still in high school). A skilled and experienced diagnostic team focuses on intensive assessment, working with the patient, family and other treatment partners, considering genetic, psychological and social factors that affect functioning and well-being. A clear and accurate diagnosis creates the foundation for an effective treatment plan.

The shining jewel in Lindner Center of HOPE’s crown is Sibcy House. It is a specialized and enhanced therapeutic residential environment for adults, 18 and older, suffering with complex, mental health, addiction or co-morbid conditions.

Sibcy House’s exceptional clinical team, which includes Brett Dowdy, PsyD, Chief of Psychological Services, developed four 12-day skills-building intensive programs utilizing evidence-based treatment modalities and clinical expertise.

Each skills-building track includes:

• 12-day length of stay

• Six visits with psychologist

• Two visits with psychiatrist

• Individualized goal setting

• 10 individualized coaching sessions with specialist

• Social work support

• Eating Disorder Intensive Outpatient Program attendance (for Binge Eating track only)

• One half-hour feedback meeting with psychologist and social worker

• A written summary by psychologist and social worker

These 12-day skills building intensive programs are geared for those ready to make a significant change. These programs can be a jump start for a longer-term outpatient program or a refresher for those who have learned the skills but are not applying them consistently.

The idea of Sibcy House is to meet people where they are. The individual sits down with the psychologist to help find what works for them. This program is no cookie-cutter plan. The team at Sibcy House realizes that every person’s journey is uniquely their own. They customize and carefully lay out a plan for that individual, like a tailor-made suit that fits perfectly.

Self-motivation is the key to the program. Sibcy House residents in the Skills Building Intensives may already be working with a provider but perhaps looking for more intensive, immediate assistance. Often individuals need an acute course of action, possibly triggered by an outside pressure or an upcoming event. Those already working with a provider may also simply need additional accountability and support.

Dr. Laurie Little was recruited last summer to be one of the cornerstones of the new Intensive programs at Lindner Center of HOPE. Dr. Little is a specialist in the field of binge eating disorders. With binge eating, the goal is to offer very intensive, therapeutic treatment space in a very short period.

Individual therapy with Dr. Little includes assessment, orientation to skills, and goals development. Another session speaks to mindfulness; learning how to quiet the mind and increase awareness of the body, mind, and meals. Other sessions address topics such as understanding and reducing external triggers for binge eating, understanding and reducing internal triggers for binge eating, and exploring intuitive eating. Lastly, a session focuses a shift toward movement, relapse prevention and creating an environment for success.

In a traditional clinical setting, individuals may see a therapist once or perhaps twice a week. With the intensives program, the team can accomplish a lot more in a shorter period. Skills-based mindfulness and coping skills must be learned to deal with binge eating. Individuals leave the program much more in control of their behaviors. Binge eating, as well as other disorders, can also affect sleep and daily structures. The residential system addresses all these issues.

“The goal of every mental health professional is to provide more care; to make more care available,” says Dr. Little. “That is exactly what the exclusive team at The Lindner Center is doing every day.” Their research and assessments and treatment are unmatched in this region and they will continue striving for excellence in their work and the care they provide. Often, in a primary care setting, there is need for more understanding of binge eating disorder.

The Binge Eating Disorder is one of the four programs offered at Sibcy House. The other three tracks are Dialectical Behavior Therapy, Radically Open Dialectical Behavior Therapy, and Obsessive Compulsive/Anxiety.

The 12-day intensive programs are about building skills for the individual. These intensive tracks are intended to provide a toolbox of skills quickly and efficiently to promote happiness, adaptive coping and healthier relationships. The goal is to help make individuals more successful with preventative measures put into place in order to stay on a journey of health and wellness.

Winds of change are ever present in life, but Lindner Center of HOPE is consistently finding ways to not only help clients weather the storms but thrive during them. Like a stalwart oak tree, Lindner Center of HOPE is only mighty because of its strong foundation and roots — that is where its true strength arises and flourishes.
