New Technology Offers Alternative to Surgical Face-Lifts

A new technology has entered the facial rejuvenation scene in the Cincinnati area. Donath Facial Plastic Surgery has introduced the radio-frequency face tightening device, EmbraceRF, to its arsenal of revitalization tools. This makes Alexander Donath, M.D., F.A.C.S., the first to offer this kind of treatment locally.

Radio-frequency (RF) rejuvenation technology uses RF energy to heat skin with the purpose of stimulating collagen and elastin, which helps to reduce the appearance of fine lines and loose skin in the face. The EmbraceRF device achieves this through two different procedures —FaceTite and Morpheus8 — which can be used separately or in conjunction with one another.

The FaceTite modality of the EmbraceRF device provides patients with a minimally invasive alternative to a traditional face-lift surgery. The procedure uses radiofrequency energy to target the same areas typically addressed in a face-lift, allowing for tightening and contraction of facial tissues. The procedure does not require any kind of traditional incision.

Typically, the FaceTite procedure achieves about a 30% improvement relative to a traditional surgical face-lift, depending on how much facial looseness a patient has. This procedure can be done in the office in under an hour, with no anesthesia necessary.

The simplicity of the procedure flows over into recovery time, too. Where a surgical face-lift requires a week to 10 days of downtime for recovery, FaceTite is more like a weekend recovery. Usually, it only requires two to three days of downtime, with minimal post-procedure discomfort.

The second modality of the EmbraceRF device, Morpheus8, also uses RF for facial rejuvenation. But in this case the RF is used to enhance a simultaneous micro-needling procedure.

Micro-needling is a procedure that has been around for a while and uses small needles to prick the skin in order to help generate new collagen and skin tissue for smoother, firmer, more toned skin. The Morpheus8 procedure essentially turbo-charges the results of micro-needling by adding RF energy, which gives much greater tightening effects and stimulation of collagen and elastin. Donath said that the Morpheus8 procedure has also been very effective in treating acne scarring, an historically difficult condition to treat.

Like the FaceTite procedure, Morpheus8 can be performed in an office setting without anesthesia. It is safe for all skin types and most ages. And it requires minimal downtime, with only about a day or two of redness following the procedure.

Performed together, FaceTite and Morpheus8 address multiple angles of facial rejuvenation. The Morpheus8 procedure is very effective for superficial, top-of-the-skin improvements to skin tone and texture. And, FaceTite works on revitalizing deeper skin tissues, addressing areas which the Morpheus8 may not be able to penetrate.

“We’re very selective when adding new technologies into our practice,” Donath says. “And, we only do so when we know that they’re proven to be outstanding. These procedures have both shown themselves to be outstanding.”
