The first phase of the major remodel of the Mandell-Brown Plastic Surgery Center is now complete. The million-dollar makeover has involved creating two new state-of-the-art operating rooms, with more changes coming in the next phase that’s expected to be finished by March.

The improvements are something Dr. Mark Mandell-Brown has envisioned for a while. His team has operated at the state-licensed surgery center’s Montgomery Road location for 23 years. “We’ve had only one operating room in that time,” says Dr. Mandell-Brown. “In our quest to maintain our leadership in the plastic surgery community in the tri-state, we felt it was time to update our facility and expand to two new operating rooms.”

Gallagher Contracting, in collaboration with Weigandt Development and project lead Dean Kemper, began demolition and renovation work at the end of August and has been able to keep the Mandell-Brown Plastic Surgery Center in operation throughout the duration of the construction.

Denny Gallagher, the contracting company owner, notes that Dr. Mandell-Brown and his team have been “phenomenal to work with” as the transformation takes shape. What intrigues him most about the project is Dr. Mandell-Brown’s desire to take on such an ambitious renovation at a time in his career when he and his team are already longtime regional leaders operating successfully in the space they had.

“He didn’t have to do this,” Gallagher says, “but he chose to anyway because he wanted to give his team the most state-of-the-art facility that he could for what they’re doing. Everything he’s doing is new, from the lighting to how he’s doing his med gasses. He wanted to be modernized and innovative.”

When deciding whether to embark upon the renovation, Dr. Mandell-Brown realized that he had two choices. “We could either be content in our present space as it was, or we could upgrade with enhancements that would improve patient flow and add more room for recovery and post-op,” he says. “The new layout affords more patient privacy. We updated our waiting room to have a more spacious reception area. It’s over a million dollars in renovation, but in my opinion, you just do what’s needed to do things right.”

The rest of the remodel will focus on updating the center’s offices and exam rooms. “The remainder of the space is getting its own makeover to ensure our patients feel comfortable and confident in the environment of their choice plastic surgeon,” says Dr. Gina Maccarone, Dr. Mandell-Brown’s associate and fellow cosmetic surgeon. New paint, flooring and casework will freshen up the space. “We’re looking forward to having the most state-of-the-art outpatient cosmetic center in the region,” she adds.

What was previously their only operating room will become storage, and some adjustments are also planned for the exterior of the building.

“The new operating rooms are twice as large, and we have a bigger dedicated space for the ambulatory surgeries,” says Dr. Mandell-Brown, adding that the changes are all still within the same footprint of the property they occupy along Montgomery Road. “We used to use that space for seminars, community receptions, fundraisers and staff meetings, but now we’ve dedicated it to our new operating rooms.”

Dr. Mandell-Brown specializes in “Natural Look” cosmetic surgery. The goal is “looking better, but not different,” he emphasizes. The center, nationally accredited by the Accreditation Association for Ambulatory Health Care (AAAHC), performs a wide variety of surgeries involving the face and body, including facelifts, fat injection, eyelid surgery, liposuction, revision and reconstructive procedures, and breast augmentation, reduction and lifts, among many others. They also offer the latest skin care services and noninvasive procedures, from laser hair removal, fillers/injectables, microneedling treatments and skin resurfacing and revitalization to body sculpting that nonsurgically diminishes unwanted pockets of fat.
