Few galas in the region manage to raise over $1 million in just one night, but that's exactly what JDRF aims to do again this year with its annual Cincinnatians of the Year Gala, a black-tie event to be held Saturday, May 7 at the Duke Energy Convention Center..The event draws over 750 community and business leaders from the greater Cincinnati area each year, and last year raised nearly $1.2 million, making it one of the premier nonprofit fundraising galas in the region. The recipients of the prestigious Cincinnatian of the Year honor this year are Indian Hill residents Dave Dougherty, CEO of Education at Work, and his wife Kim. This year's theme is "Happily Ever After... the Story of a Cure"..In the spirit of the theme, JDRF will tell its "story of a cure" at the event to educate community leaders about type 1 diabetes (T1D) and the devastating impact it can have. T1D is an autoimmune disease where the body’s immune system attacks and destroys certain cells in the pancreas, and it can strike in both children and adults. To tell its story, JDRF will draw upon stories by those impacted by T1D and live musical performances, including an opening number by University of Cincinnati CCM students..JDRF is the world's leading funder for type 1 diabetes research, and each year the Southwest Ohio chapter, which covers 43 counties in Kentucky, Indiana and Ohio, raises more than $3.3 million toward the mission to find a cure. The gala is its biggest fundraising event..In addition to honoring the Doughertys as Cincinnatians of the Year, the event will also recognize the 2016 JDRF Volunteer of the Year, Jamie Gindele of Blue Ash. Jamie has been a tireless volunteer and advocate for JDRF for over two decades. The event is chaired by Jamie's fellow Blue Ash resident Laura Cramer, and Susan Mustian of Hebron, Kentucky.."Everyone who is involved with JDRF is extremely proud of our Cincinnatian of the Year Gala, which this year celebrates its 32nd anniversary," said JDRF Executive Director Melissa Newman. "It's a daunting challenge to raise over $1 million through just this one event, but with great volunteer leaders like our co-chairs, honorees and Volunteer of the Year, we achieve our goals every year as a team.".Tickets for the event are still available and can be purchased online at swojdrf.org, or by contacting the JDRF Southwest Ohio chapter office at 513-793-3223. Tickets are $250, or tickets to the Happily Ever After Party are $55.
