St. X: Good Sports, Great Humans

St. X: Good Sports, Great Humans

Sports and extracurricular activities are keeping more than 85% of St. Xavier High School students active this fall.

“We encourage our students to be ‘men for others,’ so many of our sports teams will do Saturday morning service — instead of practicing, they will do service work instead,” says Assistant Vice President for Enrollment Mike Dehring.

St. X also offers a Contemplatives in Action program that helps students see God in their activities and sports programs. “Students take the time every week to stop, reflect, and pray about how they see God working through their participation in sports,” Dehring adds.

A Sense of Community

St. X is widely known for its Bombers football team. Approximately 4,000 fans attend each game. “Football games provide a sense of community that very few other sports or activities can replicate,” Dehring says.

St. X Sports is a Division I athletic organization and competes at a high level. Eleven teams have won 74 state championships!

Support & Generosity

The St. X Athletic Boosters provide financial and volunteer assistance to all St. X sports teams. About $160,000 is divided between all the teams to cover equipment, fees, uniforms, technology and upkeep. The Boosters generate funds through memberships, the annual Hall of Fame Dinner, the sports programs advertising, concession net proceeds and Split-the-Pot.

There’s also great support and generosity from the St. X Alumni Association. Currently, 53 faculty and staff members are alumni, and many of them are coaches.

Lessons Learned

St. X strives to prioritize students’ education, faith and personal growth over their success as athletes.

“The St. X sports culture is amazing,” says Becca Taylor, mother of freshman football player Cam Taylor. “The football program enforces structure, dedication and the importance of being a great human on and off the field. The lessons learned from the practices and games are far more important for my son than any win can provide — although a win is always a plus. There are many opportunities for parents to be involved, and they encourage all levels of football to support each other. We’re so glad to be a part of the Bomber family.”
